The company began life as Armitage Sanitaryware in around 1850 when they first became involved in the manufacture of sanitary ware at a time when pumped water was virtually unknown. This was also at a time when what water borne sanitation as well as hot water existed was a privilege of the very rich.
Armitage over the years have been at the forefront in design and manufacture of quality products for the bathroom and washroom. They continued to consolidate their position in the market when they merged in 1969 with one of their main competitors, Shanks Holdings, established at Barrhead near Glasgow in 1878. This produced the now famous name of Armitage Shanks to become one of the largest makers of sanitaryware in the UK. In 1999, Armitage Shanks became part of the global group of companies American Standard.
